In one of the most informative articles ever printed in the Hesperia Horizon ( the quarterly City of Hesperia newsletter), where your property tax dollars end up is explained in the Summer 2007 issue. I will give you the short version.
Do you know where your property taxes go after you pay them? Are they paying for police and fire services? Paving roads? Schools and school administrators? Parks?
The following is a typical breakdown of a Hesperia property owners tax distribution. Based on the median home value in Hesperia of $318,500 the 1% property tax that you pay the County of San Bernardino would come to $3,185 dollars. From that ,the Hesperia Unified School District will get 51% of your property tax payment at $1,624 dollars. Next in line is San Bernardino County at 14% or $631 dollars. Hesperia Fire Protection District is next at 15% or $487 dollars. The Community College, the Hesperia Parks and Recreation District and Flood Control Zone 4 take up the next 13% at around $450 dollars.
Almost last of the agencies in getting any of your property tax back comes the City of Hesperia at 1.59% or a whopping $51 dollars returned out of the $3,185 that you paid to the County of San Bernardino in property taxes. This money along with 1% of the local sales tax is where the City of Hesperia General Fund gets its revenue from. The General Fund pays for the Police Force- Roads-Salaries- Debt Service and all of the other normal operations of the City. Out of the 2007-2008 General Fund expenditures of $27.7 Million dollars only $1,080,000 will be from property tax dollars returned from the County of San Bernardino.
The breakdown of property tax distribution or where your tax dollars end up at is seriously flawed in my opinion. What do you think? It is your money. Is it going where it is needed the most?
